GIMP is a raster image editor. Therefore GIMP can't edit or create vector images at all, and neither can any other raster image editor such as Photoshop. Printers usually accept other vector image formats too, such as Adobe Illustrator files (.ai) or.eps files which are pretty much the industry standard. You could even get an open source vector image editor such as Inkscape, which is quite capable of producing vector images and saving them as.eps files.
